I did not set out to
work on trust

I set out to build things. Trust turned out to be the hardest thing to build, and the only one that mattered.

Early in my career I watched a technically flawless system fail completely. Nothing broke. The mathematics held. People simply did not believe it — and so they worked around it, quietly, until it was worthless. That failure taught me more than any success since.

Since then my work has lived in the space between what technology can do and what institutions can responsibly allow it to do. I have written policy, contributed to international standards, founded and run a company, and sat in rooms where a single decision would shape how millions of people are assessed by a machine.

What I bring to a stage is not fear and not hype. It is the view from inside the rooms where these decisions actually get made — and a genuine belief that leaders who take responsibility seriously will out-build those who do not.

The future is not something that happens to us. It is written by whoever shows up to write it.
